What Does the Term “Mansafe” Really Mean in Modern Fall Protection? 🤔

This is an area that we discuss regularly as there are many fall protection manufacturers, businesses and contractors who continue to make false claims to the market about the services, and products that they can offer.
The term Mansafe is widely used yet often misunderstood, and many irresponsible manufacturers and contractors exploit this confusion to market unsafe or non-compliant systems, putting lives at risk and exposing clients to major financial liability. It’s become a catch-all label for any fall arrest or restraint system, despite vast differences in design, purpose, and compliance.
At fallarrest.com we believe in clarity and confidence when it comes to protecting people at height because at the end of the day it is your safety, and life at risk.
How It Started.
Years ago, before cable-based fall protection was common, Latchways introduced the Transfastener travel device. Legend has it that the design came after a tragic boating accident, and the inventor wanted to create a safer, continuous connection. Though it failed in the marine world, Latchways’ innovation reshaped construction safety, setting a new industry benchmark for working at height.
Their “Mansafe” system became synonymous with engineered fall protection, much like “Hoover” did for vacuum cleaners except here, misunderstanding the brand could cost lives.
The Problem Today.
Many companies now misuse the Mansafe name to advertise inferior systems.
Fact: MANSAFE is a registered trademark of Latchways plc (now MSA Safety Incorporated), in both the UK and US, covering safety and life-saving equipment. Installing unapproved systems can void warranties, guarantees, and even insurance.
Fact: Only approved installers can test genuine MANSAFE systems.
Should a business, manufacturer or contractor claim otherwise, they’re not being honest, and that dishonesty can endanger lives. At least one of these irresponsible businesses has gone to the effort of countering our efforts to keep people safe by releasing an article littered with false claims and mis-truths, this is not professional and is this the type of business that you wish to deal with for life saving equipment? We won’t name them, but if you see the article, be rest assured they are false claims.
The Bottom Line.
Be cautious. Some manufacturers still mislead the market, prioritising profit over safety, and true responsibility lies in protecting people, not exploiting confusion. When lives are on the line, there’s no room for marketing spin, only facts, integrity, and compliant systems.
Please be reminded, that the following should prove our point!
1. Patented Trademarks.
2. Manufacturers letter.
Don’t be fooled. Your life depends on it, so does your finances.
And, finally, we do find it interesting that other businesses complete business model is based on the success of a competitors businesses products and marketing.
